So… I just watched Pretty Woman for the first time. There are so many issues
with this film (let’s just say the fact that it’s a love story of a prostitute and her
customer is the least of my concerns here), but I’m just gonna say this:
Vivian is a doll.
I don’t mean she’s a sweetheart. I mean she is a doll and Edward is dressing
her up. And that’s most of the movie. He also teaches her manners and
educates her – There’s the brief lecture on opera (which, by the way, is bullshit),
some Shakespeare… But mostly it’s a game of dress-up, transforming Vivian
from trash to class, and then parading her around so everyone can look at her.
